BFF Java - Trip to the PI DAY Announcement
My computer is set up in the back corner of our store, I can hear the fan from the convection oven humming along, We just took out 3 Apple pies, special ordered for a birthday. One has a Dutch crust with the apples bubbling out over the crust, and in one the regular top crust pie has caramel oozing between the layers of apples. The oven has yet to produce the cherry pies, one of which is a chocolate cherry. Pick up is in several hours. I may have to bake another one for us for dinner, the smell in here is making my mouth water. Why do I mention this, 'cause I don't tweet and I want to share.
Our initial intent was to match our ground coffee flavors to our latte and cappuccino flavors at our coffee shop, but that is way too easy. Or, we could, be like everyone else and have a Spring Line, a Summer Line, a Fall Line and a Winter Line, but then we're part of the pack. We decided, instead, to lead the pack - to come up with flavor profiles for our K-Cups and Ground Coffee offerings that are unique to us. The journey has been interesting and the results are really cool.
After studying the "pack" for a while and learning more about what it takes to actually flavor coffee, we decided on a course of action that might set flavored coffee on it's ear for some time to come. So here is a bit of our journey interlaced with our plans for the future. First, comes the fact that very little flavored coffee is decaffeinated. Why, actually we don't know why, but perhaps it's because flavoring coffee is labor intensive in small quantities and costly in large quantities. Either way decaffeinated coffee may be ruled out as not worth the trouble. We will flavor decaffeinated coffee. Next, came the question of how much flavor is enough to flavor specialty coffee, with it's own special flavors. Folks who flavor coffee seem to rely on a "bland" coffee that does not compete with the flavoring. Our specialty coffee is not "bland" and to have to buy a "bland" specialty coffee goes against everything in our nature. We had to find a way to flavor specialty coffee with all it's own characteristics intact.
(Nuts, the buzzer just went off, now the store smells of both apple and cherry pie, maybe, they'll believe me when I tell them the missing pieces were for quality control? )
And, of course, we then discovered how much flavor is enough, too much or not enough to flavor coffee: especially coffee with existing flavors of their own? Even "bland" coffee had some flavor so how much flavor do we use? Do you flavor the beans, then grind or do grind, then flavor the grinds? Both modes of flavoring exist today, which is best for us and for our customers?
Finally, what flavors do we even attempt? Again, do we go with the pack, lead the pack, or do something so completely outrageous that even people who have never heard of BFFJAVA.com but know us will say "What did Carl and Beth do NOW?" or "What, that's Nuts! Did Beth & Carl Borecky have something to do with this?"
We choose Outrageous!
As for taste, that depends on the people who flavor the coffee, you are forced to drink what they like, even if the "they" is a panel of tasters, or worse yet a computer program. Flavored coffee is a medium of all those who participated in the tasting. Period, No choice. We like having choices (which might explain the 50,000 apple trees and 63 kinds we grow).
We will provide choices when flavoring coffee.

Our Choices for flavored Coffee
First, we will provide 3 taste profiles per flavor:
Next, What if someone doesn't drink caffeinated coffee? Or maybe they only want a flavored cup for lunch? Or maybe someone out there actually doesn't like coffee? Or, heaven forbid, someone wants a new flavor but doesn't want to try a BFFJAVA coffee? Not to mention: BFFJAVA currently has 4 kinds of Decaffeinated, 6 kinds of Fully Caffeinated, and 4 kinds of Half Caffeinated for a total of 14 kinds. 14 Kinds by 3 taste profiles means we would have to stock 42 kinds of ground coffee and 42 kinds of K-cups for each flavor we develop. That's Crazy.
The answer, to us, is obvious. Develop and sell the flavors outside of the coffee realm. That's right, we are selling 3 taste profiles per flavor that you can use with any beverage made by any producer!
The original flavored shot created at BFFJAVA is an exclusive only available at BFFJAVA.COM. Flavored shots are specially crafted in small batches (much like we roast our coffee). These batches are then used to fill small convenient containers which you can carry with you on the go to flavor your favorite coffee, tea, hot chocolate, or water. You may also want to try them on ice cream or in cool whip. You are in control of your flavor preference according to your taste buds, not ours! Select HINT-O if you like a little flavor, SPLASH-O if you want to know the flavor is there, or BURST-O for extra flavor.
Each 2ml flavor shot container contains enough flavor in it's class (BURST, SPLASH, or HINT) to flavor 2 to 5 cups of Coffee, Milk, Tea, Vanilla Shakes, whatever your heart and taste buds desire! Our 5ml container provides enough flavor for 10 to 12 cups. Now: That's Outrageous!
The flavors are liquid for 3 Reasons
Back to the apple and cherry pies. A slice of the apple pie right now would be wonderful. A slice of pie and a big Mug of Domination. And then another of the Cherry pie (just to balance things out) and a big Mug of Homestead. Do the calories really fall out if you take small bites? Will my Glycemic Index take a hit? Can I afford the calories on my diet? Does talk of the consequences of the pie eating ruin the mood? Well, yes it does. But here is some really good news: Beth, my wife and best friend, and I have been baking and cooking together and individually for a combination of over 75 years. We decided to take that expertise and apply it to our next offering. We have converted all the good flavor of various pies and stuffed it into flavor shots. Shots have no fats, added sugars, no tree nuts, no gluten and calories measured in 1/100ths of a calorie per shot (what the industry would call 0). So Drink a slice of Apple pie, drink a Slice of Chocolate cherry pie! Have a mug of pie after every meal and before bedtime. Fill in the cravings with BFFJAVA.COM Flavor shots and your favorite beverage.

- BURST-O- just as it sounds a burst of flavor that springs forth in your cup and mouth and on your tongue think of too much lighter fluid and a match. VAAROOOOM! Flavor explosion
- SPLASH-O- Flavor that you can taste, but not so much that it overpowers everything around it. In keeping with the fire theme, think of a crackling fire and snuggled in a warm blanket on a cold night, you feel the fire but appreciate the blanket
- HINT-O- Flavor that is in the background. The full flavor of whatever is in your cup is still there it is just enhanced. As for the fire theme, HINT-O- flavor is the pleasant smell of a campfire in the distance, It brings back great memories but doesn't overpower the one you are creating now.

The flavors are liquid for 3 Reasons
- They pour easier
- They mix and distribute easier
- It's much easier to explain containers of liquid than of <white> powder in your purse or pocket.
